Many of you know that I am a fairly active member of the electronic forum community. I've participated in more of these forums than I am ever likely to remember, and, like any message board participant, my experiences have ranged from being highly regarded and respected, to being treated with disrespect and hostility.
This is an unfortunate fact of life regarding internet message boards, one that was recently driven home by my experience with another message board site, at www.rabble.ca. Many of us can likely attest that what can make the difference between being a "valued mamber" of a message board and a "troll" falls entirely down to whether or not one is welcome. When arriving on this particular forum (which I had discovered via Google search), I quickly found it to be dominantly left-wing. Having numerous left-wing political beliefs myself, I wasn't the slighest bit daunted. However, the first time I disagreed with these self-avowed lefties (you will quickly realize, as I realized, that they aren't true liberals), a certain individual took it upon himself to tell me "your existence offends me". Wow. That's one hell of an experience. I've never had one quite like it, and I would be upset about it if I had so much as the slightest reason to give a shit what that particular dimwit thought. Undaunted, I continued to post my opinions as they are. I post under my real name for a reason -- if I can't post something honestly, with my own name attached, then there would be something wrong with it. Quickly, I found myself in the typical "swarm" flaming scenario. Which has always been, and always will be, fine with me. I can always fight back twice as hard as I'm attacked. You could call it a unique combination of courage, stubbornness, and outright malignance. I recently found myself banned from this particular site. A site moderator had even taken it upon herself to brand me "anti-choice" . I had been given no warning, no opportunity to avoid this. As soon as I dissented -- BAM! Banned. It's an unfortunate case of message board censorship -- removing someone from your message board because they disagree with you. It happens quite often in some boards, and some of us have even been subject to it.
This brings me, ultimately, down to the point. As the administrator of a site that I have invited people to come and post on, I feel that I have asked participants for a great deal of trust. I feel that any other site administrator has asked for the same amount of trust -- no more, no less. So I'd like to make myself very clear on this matter. When I ask for your trust, I know that I cannot demand it. Certainly, I have to earn it. I intend to earn your trust by running this message board the way that I have promised you that I will. With full respect for every single member, and twice as much respect for their opinion -- even when it differs from mine. On this message board, everyone is free to disagree with anyone. In fact, for the sake of the board's intellectual health, it will, at times, be expected. While I promise you that anyone who joins this site who is reported to me and confirmed as being one of these tyranical "banamaniacs" will be immediately banned from this site (they are not welcome here, and every effort will be made, once reported, to confirm them through investigation using registered e-mail addresses, as well as IP addresses). Absolutely everyone else is welcome at this site, and will be made welcome to this site. Unlike the administrators of other sites, we here at the Nexus do not and will not lie to our members. "Banamaniacs" can consider themselves on notice. We here at the Nexus do things differently -- honestly, the way they should be done.
